I joined Seiko Epson Corporation in 2007, and after transferring to Seiko Watch Corporation in 2012, I was in charge of designs for the Seiko brand. Currently, I am in charge of Grand Seiko watch design and design developments for realizing new exterior elements.
When I design a watch, the important point I think is not only the beauty of the design itself but also the way to reach the design, and the concept needs to be attractive. Therefore, I become so excited when I come up with an idea involving all these things. Although it is hard to go through trial and error attempting different production methods with colleagues from the design and manufacturing departments, I am so happy that I will forget all hardships when customers accept the watches that we put our passion into.
The SBGC231 was the first Grand Seiko that I designed. The lion emblem has long been a symbol of Grand Seiko, appearing on case backs reflecting the strong ambition to be “the king of watches.” By enhancing this spirit and finding inspiration in the lion’s majesty for the shape, we have created a new Sport Collection design unique to the brand. While various parts of the watch are inspired by the lion, the connection is especially characterized by the claw-like shape of the lugs, which powerfully holds the wrist in a manner appropriate for a sports watch.
The SBGE285, which I designed as a GMT model in the Evolution 9 Collection. Despite the wide bezel engraved with the 24-hour display, the case designed for a low center of gravity make it a comfortable size to wear. I like the monochromatic impression, thanks to the light-grey textured dial, which was inspired by the morning mists of Shinshu. The size is just right for me, and the color is easy to match with various styles and occasions, including work or leisure. I think this watch will be a good partner that one can wear anywhere.
