Launched in 1967, the 62GS marked a crucial milestone in Grand Seiko’s history. It not only showcased technical excellence as the brand’s inaugural automatic watch but also introduced a distinctive design that would influence the brand for decades. In the contemporary era, the 62GS has experienced a resurgence, gaining popularity through references like the SBGA413, SBGA415, SBGH271, SBGH273, and SBGH295.

All the aforementioned models share common features, including a 40mm multi-sided case, a generously wide dial opening, a dual-curve box-shaped sapphire crystal, bezel-free construction, and the signature Zaratsu polishing technique. With its two newest releases, Grand Seiko introduces a fresh interpretation of the 62GS, retaining many fundamental design elements but reducing the case diameter to 38mm: the Heritage Collection SBGH341 “Sakura-Kakushi” and SBGH343 “Sakura-Wakaba.”

Inspired by Shunbun (the vernal equinox and the fourth term of the 24 seasons occurring in the latter part of March), the pink dial of SBGH341 encapsulates an enchanting scene of the Tohoku region known as “Sakura-Kakushi” (hiding cherry blossoms). It elegantly reflects the ephemeral beauty of snow blanketing blooming cherry blossoms.

In resonance with the fifth term of the 24 seasons, SBGH343 embraces Seimei, translating to “clear and bright.” Early April unfolds in a spectacle where flowers bloom, young leaves sprout, and a warm spring breeze, along with bright sunshine, bathes everything in a “clear and bright” ambiance. The light green dial effortlessly mirrors the fresh hues of “Sakura-Wakaba” (cherry blossoms and young leaves), inviting one to savor the gentle green beauty of sunlight penetrating young leaves interspersed with cherry blossoms.

Crafted from high-intensity titanium, the case of each watch showcases a refined aesthetic with a diameter of 38mm and a slim profile at 12.9mm thickness. The lug width measures 20mm, ensuring a balanced and comfortable fit. Secured with a high-intensity titanium bracelet complete with a three-fold clasp, each watch marries style with day-to-day functionality. The crown is equipped with a screw-down feature for added protection.

The use of a dual-curve sapphire crystal enhances both clarity and durability, and the case back, also made of high-intensity titanium, features a sapphire crystal, providing a glimpse into the intricate movement within.

The technical marvel within both references is the self-winding Caliber 9S85, a Hi-Beat 36000 movement that operates with an impressive accuracy range of +5 to -3 seconds per day when static. The timepieces boast a substantial power reserve of approximately 55 hours and feature 37 jewels. Grand Seiko movements are a testament to unparalleled craftsmanship, and on top of their technical proficiency also feature meticulous finishing.
